About this deal

New material relations among the social classes of the twenty-first century have already presented themselves. If there is a China expert that knows what he is talking about, it is Frank Dikötter, professor of the Modern History of China (on leave) from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. These contradictions continue to manifest in how the party-state deals with the private sector, the persistent issues of non-performing loans and unsustainable banking practices, or even the problem of corruption that continues to persist ever since the reforms and opening policy started.

He also comes to the surprising conclusion that even after all the reforms, China is not that different from forty years ago. Once readers complete the book, they will be equipped to make sense of the connection between China’s internal developments and their impact on the external world.

There are many important events whose unfoldings and explanations are a little bit short and simplistic, not as nuanced as I like.

Earlier, he had authored influential works like The Discourse of Race in Modern China and the award-winning People’s Trilogy. The result means some general readers might find China After Mao a little dry, but it’s hard to fault Dikötter’s patient, thoroughly documented exegesis of Beijing’s economic claims and the often dubious methods that underpin them. A crackdown sent over 35,000 to jail, continuing through 2001 when 40 million Christians were persecuted, their leaders sent to labor camps.I have read his chilling account of Mao's Great Famine and have yet to read his account of the Cultural Revolution, but couldn't resist skipping to this book instead. In Dikötters umfassendem Werk finde ich die Darstellung der 80er-Jahre besonders gelungen, weil sich das Wissen über China im Westen damals meist auf wenige persönliche Kontakte und die Berichte von Auslandskorrespondenten beschränkte. China After Mao: The Rise of a Superpower: Frank Dikötter

Dikötter delivers an excellent, highly critical description of China's spectacular expansion that emphasizes banking, industrial policy, trade, and currency … a richly informative, disquieting history. A central theme of the first three chapters is that paramount leader, Deng Xiaoping (1978–1989), representing the “opening up” initiative, is not deserving of his reputation in China and abroad as a pathfinding reformer. Proclamations followed that China ‘will never copy the separation of powers and multi-party systems of the West’. The looming economic and demographic storm clouds that now present a new challenge to the party’s supremacy are treated only in passing here, but as Dikötter outlines, there is nothing the Chinese Communist Party is more adept at than self-preservation.

Joining the WTO in 2000 trade imbalances with the US ballooned to a quarter trillion dollars per year, putting factories in America and Mexico out of business. Lech Walesa’s Solidarity Party led Poland to a peaceful transition to democracy, following the Tiananmen debacle, increasing paranoia in the CCP that communism was failing on all fronts. Dikötter, a Hong Kong-based Dutch historian, has previously published a trilogy of books charting Chinese history since the coming to power of the Communist Party in 1949.
