Lesbian, gay and transgender (LGBTQ+) patients face inequalities in their experience of NHS healthcare. A 2018 Stonewall survey estimates that one in five LGBTQ+ people are not out to any healthcare professional when seeking general medical care, and one in seven LGBTQ+ people have avoided treatment for fear of discrimination. Adolf Hitler was appointed chancellor of Germany on January 30, 1933. Soon afterwards, Germany’s gay and lesbian communities came under pressure and scrutiny from the new regime. For men accused of homosexuality, this worsened over the course of the 1930s. They faced brutal persecution. Shutting Down Lesbian and Gay Meeting Places By eliminating gay and lesbian gathering places and presses, the regime effectively dissolved the lesbian communities that had developed during the Weimar Republic. Expanding the Persecution of Men Accused of Homosexuality During the Weimar era, Germans publicly challenged gender and sexual norms. Ace playing cards, due to the phonetic shortening from asexual to ace, are sometimes used to represent asexuality. The ace of hearts and ace of spades are used to symbolize romantic asexuality and aromantic asexuality respectively. The use of color in the lesbian badge also has a symbolic meaning. For example, pink has historically been associated with femininity and has been used as a color associated with lesbian identity. Purple is also associated with lesbianism, representing lesbian community and pride. Other colors of the rainbow can be used to represent diversity and inclusion in the lesbian community. In lesbian prisoners’ paperwork, camp authorities usually listed a racial, political, social, or criminal reason as the primary cause for their arrest. Increased awareness of the issues surrounding LGBTQ+ people when accessing healthcare on the part of NHS staff can make significant differences to LGBTQ+ people’s experience and, in turn, on their physical and mental health.
