Among Islay distillers, Laphroiag was the big winner, taking two Gold Outstanding medals for its 10 YO Sherry Oak Finish Single Malt Scotch Whisky and its Select Single Malt Scotch Whisky. Islay whiskies marry particularly well with sweet wine casks, producing expressions that are smoky and with distinct fruity and sweet notes. It’s worth reflecting on whether those opinions have been driven by recent informed experience, or just plain whisky snobbery. I’m not evangelising; it took a series of most fortunate events for me to give this dram ago. But, by being open minded, I have been surprised. What other “entry level” drams would readers recommend? This year’s judging produced an outstanding selection of Scotch whiskies. Some well-known, perennial medalists, others less so. Plenty to explore and discover here. The nose is brilliant but there is not much development in the mouth. I’d guess this is a mix of sherry and bourbon casks, similar to the current 12 year old, but here the whisky is soft and has very well integrated flavours which delivers a little more sophistication than the current bottle. Score: 5/10 It's owned by the Takara Shuzo company. Around eighty percent of Tomatin's whisky goes into blended whisky, including its own brands of Antiquary and Talisman. When I came to draft this review, I reflected on why we are often reluctant to look at the “lower end” of a particular distillery’s output. I am generally a fan of what Tomatin do, having written about the reasonable French Collection in which I gave an 8/10 to a Cadenhead’s bottling of Tomatin from a bourbon cask. I also found the Whisky Meets Sherryenticing. Whisky snobbery takes many forms: only drinking single casks, requiring cask strength whiskies, derision of young whiskies, etc. It can be quite wearying.The Tomatin Legacy is a no age statement (NAS) expression that is matured in a combination of ex-Bourbon and Virgin Oak casks. The Tasting Note on the Tomatin Legacy described it as: For this article “what matters” is that Made Brave sent Malt a gift which ended up in my hands. It turned out to be a rather charming hip flask – not the actual one from the tear-jerking video, but a similar one – and a miniature of Tomatin 12 year old. That was rather well timed, as I had just opened a 1990s bottle of Tomatin 12 year old and it allowed me to do a side by side review for our readers, and also provided me with a little bit of material for a preamble to this review… so, thanks Tomatin. While the brand recognition may not reflect that level of grandness today, it is certainly a distillery that is held in high regards by Whisky folk.

On Sunday morning I paid the atrocious price of a heavy-head for that high-spirited whisky drinking on top of a lively lunch. Fortunately, I had returned with a reasonable sample remaining in the bottle to allow for this review.
